“Guillermo Sexo are a Boston based band all about “the song.” Songs that echo with fuzzed out intensity, dense dreamy mood swings, and psych-pop songcraft, they creatively combine raw elements of punk, shoegaze and psych-folk, they whittle them into precious gems.
Their fifth and most recent release, Dark Spring, marked the band’s debut on the Boston/Brooklyn label Midriff Records; of which Clicky Clicky Music Blog called an album that “crackles with vitality.” Guillermo Sexo wrapped up 2013 with Dark Spring appearing on various Best Of Year lists and appearances in two music festivals – Together Fest and Boston Fuzztival respectively.”
Prelims starts April 6, semi-finals April 17-18, and the finals are scheduled for Friday, April 25. Lineups to be announced soon! Click here to see all the bands selected.

Jay from Clicky Clicky Music blog had Dark Spring at #9 on his top 10 albums of 2013.
“Diving deeper within to explore sounds and textures in the studio, Boston psych-rock unit Guillermo Sexo yet maintain an admirable level of focus, which is brought to bear on the urgent and dreamy material on its fifth long player Dark Spring. The remarkably varied album touts two seven-minute-plus opuses (inluding “Meow Metal,” which was recognized in our year-end, best songs list) that speak to the band’s confidence and willingness to stretch out and chase ambitious ideas. The set’s first third, however, features a slate of immediate and more concise rockers. The collection has a classic ’70s feel, adventurous and with an almost narrative quality, making it perhaps the most “albumy” album on this year-end list. We reviewed Dark Spring right here in September; buy it from Midriff right here”
“Meow Metal” also made the cut in the top songs list.
Our year-end list this year has leaned hard toward songs with hooks versus songs with an intense vibe. Well, here’s your intense vibe. An other-worldly, epic prog-influenced rocker, a headphones-required exploration of the places that only the veteran Boston-based psych-pop juggernaut Guillermo Sexo can take you. We’ve never taken steps to confirm or deny that this tune is just about living with a spooky cat, probably because we’re afraid knowing one way or the other might somehow diminish the beautiful mystery painted here with Reuben Bettsak’s 10 million guitars and singer/keyboardist/birthday girl Noell Dorsey’s entrancing vocals. Despite being more than seven minutes in length, “Meow Metal” is not the longest tune on Dark Spring, but it is perhaps the best at capturing the zeitgeist of what Guillermo Sexo was about in 2013. Dark Spring was released by Midriff in September; buy it right here.

Guillermo Sexo will be opening a fantastic bill of pop singer Sky Ferreira (Capitol Records) and Chicago indie rock band Smith Westerns tonight at the Paradise Rock Club. Guillermo’s set time is 8pm and there’s a good chance it will sell out at the door, so come early. We’ll have copies of the new record, Dark Spring, on CD and freshly pressed vinyl. This will be their first time playing the ‘dise and will be one to remember. See you there!

Lots of great things being said about the excellent new Guillermo Sexo album Dark Spring. You can stream the album over at vanyaland and purchase it over at Midriff Records site.
“We first got a taste of the new Guillermo Sexo record, Dark Spring, in the dead of winter. Three tracks emerged in the form of the self-released Bring Down Your Arms EP, led by the blistering fuzzed out battle-cry “Echo Out My Call.” Turns out, all that was just a tease, and a sign of a massive leap forward for the Boston quintet. Dark Spring, out Tuesday off Midriff Records, is a pretty complex album, almost human-like in its tendencies and attitudes. It’s at times moody and distant, and others warm and consoling. There’s a textured emotion to the entire thing, swallowed as a whole, and that’s why Vanyaland is honored to premiere Dark Spring as an exclusive stream from our friends at Midriff.” Guillermo Sexo maintain that seemingly perfect balance of clean-edged garage rock and spacey psychedelic, packaged up in polished reverb-heavy romp. The duetted vocal dynamic on “Fall Lens” brings to mind other familiar locals like Mean Creek and Bent Shapes, but still remains signature with a bit of darkness mixed into on otherwise heavy but digestible tone. Don’t let the feel of one track fool you though. Dark Spring hits on very different levels, with the amps turned up on more noise-rocky tracks, and chilling echo ringing in on more acoustic tunes” - Vanyaland – album stream and interview 9/19/13 – by Michael Marrotta
