Guillermo Sexo - Secret Wild on Ash Gray Proclamation Best of 2011 List
#19 Guillermo Sexo - Secret Wild [Boy Girl Boy Girl]
Boston's dream pop quartet, Guillermo Sexo issued their fourth LP, Secret Wild in July and provided a melodic and discordant soundtrack to the end of summer. Noelle Dorsey takes the lion share of vocal duties with goose bump inducing affect, leaving guitarist Reuben Bettsak focused in on delivering stunning atmospherics, hypnotic guitar lines, and airy psychedelics. Secret Wild is a rich and varied offering and one of the finest things we heard in 2011.
FRIDAY 12/16 - Tiger Mountain II with Future Carnivores, The Living Kills, Soccer Mom
Future Carnivores - New indie project from Guillermo Sexo's Reuben Bettsak and Noelle Dorsey and ME AND JOAN COLLINS Bo Barringer. Debut release in the near future -
The Living Kills (NYC) - These guys and gal blew me away when they played with Guillermo Sexo at Piano's in Brooklyn on their Fall tour. They were one of the best bands Guillermo Sexo played with on the tour playing spaced out psych rock taking cues from Spaceman 3, Hawkwind, Sonic Youth, and The Black Angels. so trust me.. Also there is no better environment to see this band in than the basement of the Cambridge Elks. Don't miss em.
Soccer Mom - One of my favorite bands in Boston hands down.. Dig LOUD grungy shoegaze?? Course you do.LISTENto their new 10" You Are Not Going to Heaven. Bring yo earplugz!

Guillermo Sexo - Secret Wild "New England Deli" August CD of the Month
Guillermo Sexo’s Secret Wild begins with the aptly titled, “Color The Noise”. The hollow-bodied guitar effects give the song a retro feel while their art noise approach gives it an entirely contemporary feel. Add slightly monotone vocals that split the difference between Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and the Velvet Underground’s Nico and you have a formula for success.“Skyline” cranks up the art-noise while dialing back the retro. “Secret Wild” pares everything back, stripping down to a near-acoustic delivery. Most of the tracks stretch out nicely, clocking in at four-plus minutes, allowing them to breathe and find their groove. A notable exception to the long-form tendency of Secret Wild is “Green Eyes”, clocking in at under two minutes, which finds the band experimenting with a quick burst of garage-punk. Secret Wild represents another leap forward and entertaining evolution in the sound that Guillermo Sexo has been refining for more than seven years now. The New England Deli- August 2011
Guillermo Sexo in Stuff @ Night
This week Stuff@Night has an article highlighting the resurgence of the 90's sound in 6 current Boston bands. Young Adults are also included in the article and they just so happen to be playing the Guillermo Sexo's Secret Wild record release July 16th at Precinct in Somerville. READ IN FULL >>
GUILLERMO SEXO
Influences: Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices, Archers of Loaf, Swervedriver, Lush, Pavement, Built to Spill, the Pixies, and My Bloody Valentine.
Hear them now: onVivid Nights at guillermosexo.bandcamp.com.
Hear them live: on July 16 at the release party for their forthcoming record, Secret Wild, at Precinct.
"I think it's cool that this is happening," says guitarist and vocalist Reuben Bettsak. "But like with any resurgence, there are bands that do it well and bands that just suck at getting the sound right, or maybe they just suck at writing songs." Guillermo Sexo certainly don't fall into the latter category, though they do mine the tinny, feedback-heavy '90s for their sound; they even record with Justin Pizzoferrato, an engineer who has also worked with Dinosaur Jr. and Thurston Moore.
Even before Bettsak (the only original member left in the group) founded the band in 2004, he was enamored of the '90s Boston sounds - think Syrup USA, the Dambuilders, the Wicked Farleys, and Swirlies. Bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth further shaped his guitar playing, and such influences are evident in the band's shouty, danceable, high-energy rock, which somehow ends up being a lot more fun than those style markers might make you think. "I can't help but dial in those fuzzy, distorted delay sounds of the '90s," Bettsak says. "It's part of our sound. Our goal is to take those influences and create something that sounds different."
Guillermo Sexo's new full length Secret Wild is out locally July 16th and nationally in August.

AS BUILT PR SXSW 2011 & Beyond Sampler
A labor of love to say the least, I stickered, glued, and burned 200 of these gnarly samplers (thankfully with the help of multiple burners) to pass around out at SXSW, Boston, and my travels through out the summer. It featured 24 (on the bandcamp) tracks of new and unreleased music from the artists we work with, booked in the past, and buddy rock bands that need to be heard. There's a little something for everyone on here, I feel that it represents a large range of the great artists we have coming out of Boston; Starting off with the jaunty 60's pop of Mount Peru and ending with a taste of electronic beat music from my good friend Main Fader and a track from yours truly. Thanks to all the bands for letting me use their tracks and Will Malizia for once again coming through with some forward thinking design. Dig in!!

Soft Pyramids "Dwightsnake" Mp3 of Week in Boston Phoenix
“What we need is more guitars,” tweeted Mike Rodriguez of As Built PR on February 13. A week later, the Boston-based marketing and promotions company unveiled SOFT PYRAMIDS’ debut EP, a detached-cool rock and roll afterparty racket that recalls a late-’70s Lower East Side punk attitude with nary and electronic device in sight (or sound). Whereas standout track “Dwightsnake” may or may not be about Doc Gooden replacing David Coverdale in a glam metal band, it does enough aurally to align the young Cambridge quartet with the slim-fit garage rock revivalists from a decade ago (Longwave, Moving Units). Soft Pyramids self-release the intriguing Electric Scenes EP March 10 at Precinct in Somerville (the east-end site of the Deep Heaven Now festival) on a stellar northeasterner bill alongside former MP3 of the Week’ers Mount Peru and Portland, Maine’s Brenda, but you can grab the “Dwightsnake” mp3 below.
I'm thrilled to announce the newest addition to the AS BUILT Media Group family, Boston's Soft Pyramids. They played the second show of our September Wednesday night AS BUILT PResents Residency at O'Brien's Pub and threw down an energetic set of hip shaking rock and roll, capping of with a spot on rendition of Television's "See No Evil" Soft Pyramids play melodic and dynamic rock and roll with a driving beat and hooks that will be stuck in your heads for days. Indebted to an amalgamation of rock and roll since the late 70's, the 6 songs on their debut EP Electric Scenes evoke The Strokes, Franz Ferdinands' first album, the recently deceased White Stripes, Television, and Radiohead. Listen to the tracks below and bust them out to some nice weather! (hopefully soon)
Please hit me up if you'd like the link to the press DL
Live videos from Many Mansions, Birthdays, Lord Jeff, Anna Fox Fox
A many thanks to Dank (aka Main Fader), Brendan, and Asteroid M for providing the visuals and recordings for an all around legendary night. Shout out to the extremely drunk kid that was REALLY into the tunes!!
I haven't been this excited about a show (and not even just counting my own) in a looooong time. Fans of the many strains of psychedelia will be happy campers...DO NOT miss this one. Listen to tunes from the artists > RIGHT HUR
Wed 11.17 at O'Brien's ; AS BUILT PResents Summer of Aden // Huddled Masses // Mount Peru // BRP
For our November AS BUILT PResents showcase we will again invade O'Brien's Pub in Allston with some of Boston's best talent. To kick off the night we have a solo performance by Adam from Allston's sludgy americana mainstays The Broken River Prophet. Next up we've got and acoustic set from Somerville's up and coming Glam Hangover/Powerpop/Post-Americana Mount Peru. Think whiskey, fall porch nights, Dylan, southern twang. Their debut album will be out in the very near future and will surely be full to the brim of refined "cosmic americana" (BBC). On third we have Huddled Masses, the brooding side project from Elliott (Bass) and Reuben from Guillermo Sexo. Elliott takes on the vocal and guitar duties in Huddled Masses while Reuben lays down the beats. To cap off the bill, we've got breezy indie pop newcomers Summer of Aden who I'm really excited to see for the first time. Belle & Sebastian, The Zombies, The Shins, and Elliott Smith fans beware.
