MOUNT PERU - My Sweetheart The Destroyer (2011)
Like a pirate transmission from a faraway radio, on a heartbroken planet not unlike this one, the narcotic hymns of a band of space pilgrims reverberate through the atmosphere. Hurtling toward our galaxy, this company of cosmic pioneers call themselves Mount Peru, broadcasting a strange and beautiful message coded in hypnotic strains of postmodern Americana. That message has reached earth, and Mount Peru's debut album, My Sweetheart, the Destroyer (2011), has exploded onto the Boston music scene with the gentle yet insistent force of a slo-mo supernova. Recorded in an old, creaky paper warehouse deep in the urban wilderness of Boston, MA and produced by Eric Masunaga at Modulus Studios (Magnetic Fields, Sebadoh, Dambuilders), each track is a fuss in the sonic dust-- sometimes a rodeo, other times a gunfight, and others still a barroom brawl -- all recollected in feverish whiskey-soaked dreams by the campfire. In spite of the rattling shopping carts of the nearby supermarket and the disharmonious clanging of the mechanics shop below, Mount Peru's debut effort evokes both grandeur and intimacy. Mount Peru are fresh off a tour of the Eastern US and will be focusing on playing colleges and music clubs in the northeast this fall.

"... I was absolutely blown away by just how rich, lush, and "American" their sound is. I just think of it as Americana Rock: big beautiful music that draws from country and blues and R&B and soul and all those traditions, mashes it up and sticks it in your brain so you can't get it out" - Steve Almond, author of Rock and Roll will Save your Life, Candy Freak and My Life in Heavy Metal Versatile, complete, far-reaching and thoroughly satisfying: That's My Sweetheart the Destroyer, Mount Peru’s debut in a nutshell. Its not every day you pick up an album and picture the band in question rocking the stages of dive bar or a stadium in equal measure, but Mount Peru demonstrates that intimacy and grandeur can be achieved with a simple understanding of give and take. Their ability to capitalize on numerous genres serves them well, too. The twang resonating in "Down in the Graveyard" and "I Aint Gonna Kill Myself No more" undoubtedly throws them into the Americanalt mix. "St. Cloud" and "Everybody Loves the Hospital" echo Bob Seger and the Rolling Stones, while the handclaps of "Summer Jinx" feel right at home on any radio. Destroyer stands out amongst other debut efforts as a confident product of musical exploration and we can’t wait to hear more. - Hilary Hughes - The Boston Weekly Dig Mount Peru’s rootsy balladry ("Crooked Road Blues") is only surpassed by their smart pop breezes ("Summer Jinx") ...the warm sunshine pop glide of Mount Peru’s' "Summer Jinx" is already giving us daydreams of care free beach trips and flip flops and lost weekends on the Cape a top down joyride number that shows off the sunnier side of Alt Americana - Michael Marotta - The Boston Phoenix Wonderful - Angelle Wood - Boston Emissions
